Going Green

Green at Summit Initiatives

The Adobe Digital Marketing Summit is striving to be more eco-friendly. Here are ways the Summit team and its partners are working to keep Summit green:

Venue - Salt Palace Convention Center

As we strive to reduce, reuse, and recycle; we believe that by carefully considering the environmental impact of all of our business decisions before we make them, we have been able to shrink our ecological footprint and will continue to do so. In addition, the Salt Palace Convention Center is diligently seeking the newest technology in environmental care practices in order to incorporate them into our daily operations.

  • In September 2010, Salt Lake County announced the installation of the nation's largest rooftop solar array atop the Salt Palace Convention Center.
  • Expansion in 2006 was awarded the U.S. Green Building Council's Silver LEED.
  • Single stream recycling program for aluminum, paper, cardboard, and plastic.
  • Solar panels power and operate the lighting in parking structure.
  • Waterless urinals in the restrooms in save 40,000 gallons of water per urinal per year.
  • Variable frequency drives promote the efficient operation of our HVAC system: new expansion 35-40% energy savings, 25% energy savings on existing facility.
  • HVAC systems are controlled by a centralized system so the facility managers are aware of all temperature settings.
  • A program is under way to replace all facility light fixtures with energy-efficient fluorescent lighting at a 40-60% savings in energy.
  • The executive offices all have motion sensors for the lighting systems so lights are only used when needed.
  • We monitor and exceed the indoor air quality standard by increasing the air exchange rates in the facility.
  • Utilization of drip irrigation systems in our landscape features reduces water loss from evaporation.
  • Bike racks are available in the parking structure to promote the use of human-powered mobility
  • Preferred parking positions are available for car-pooling attendees at the Salt Palace.
  • The 2006 expansion has utilized water-efficient landscaping which has reduced anticipated water needs for this landscaping by 50%.
  • 50% lighting levels in exhibit halls during move in/move out hours, heating or AC not provided.
  • Show lights reduced to 50% levels promptly at show closing.
  • Power-use reduction policy implemented building wide for climate control & lighting; presently below last year's usage of power despite an increase in space usage.
  • Concourse lighting/heating/cooling scheduled according to building use.
  • Meeting room lights turned off when not in use.
  • Stand-alone cooling system installed in Security Office so main chillers are not in use when the building is not occupied.
  • No water used outside building for cleanup - sweeping only.
  • Speaker water provided in carafes with glasses instead of bottles.
  • Caterer offers five-gallon water containers or coolers instead of plastic bottles.
  • Caterer recycles grease and fry oil.
  • Caterer uses 100% biodegradable Greenware plastic products made from plants including cups, plates, napkins and cutlery.
  • Caterer encourages local food-buying practices and uses organic food sources when appropriate.
  • Caterer distributes leftover food to The Road Home homeless shelter, Salt Lake Mission, and Utah Food Bank, and day-old bread products to local farms for animal consumption.
  • Dishwashing machines with low-level water arms were installed in the kitchen, cutting water use by 30%.
  • Office files changed from legal to letter size to conserve paper. Paper for office use is 20% post-consumer wherever possible.
  • Compost pile started; working on ways to have vendors contribute.
  • Toilet paper is 100% post-consumer, hand towels are 40% post-consumer.
  • Hand soap in restrooms is EPA green seal certified.
  • At least 50% of cleaning chemicals presently in use are green seal certified. Caterer uses 100% biodegradable, non-caustic, citrus-based cleaner.
  • Implementing program to scan archived paper files for electronic storage and recycling of paper.

Modern Exposition Service

Modern Exposition Service believes in being a good steward of the environment in which we live and of the resources that are available to us. Toward that end, we analyze each business decision before we make it and access its potential impact on the environment. If there are more ecologically friendly ways of doing something, we pursue those options.

  • Modern promotes an aggressive recycling program and annually recycles over 75 tons of cardboard and over 250,000 square feet of expo carpet.
  • Carpet that has outlived its usefulness is returned to the mill and recycled and made into new carpeting. We encourage employees to recycle and provide recycling bins in our facilities.
  • We actively promote the recycling programs of the venues in which we work, particularly the Salt Palace and South Town Exposition Center and train our employees and contractors on proper stream division of waste to maximize recycling.

Other measures we have taken to lessen our environmental impact:

  • Installing timers and motion sensors on lighting in little used areas such as warehouses, restrooms, file rooms, etc.
  • Installation of updated, computerized thermostats on all HVAC systems
  • Hard shut off of heaters and chillers in warehouse to prevent use until weather conditions dictate
  • Drip irrigation in landscaping
  • Composting of landscape waste
  • Invoices sent electronically whenever possible
  • Monthly statements no longer sent as paper but electronically
  • Signature capture pin pads at point of sale terminals instead of paper signature capture
  • Use post consumer janitorial supplies whenever possible
  • Completed retro fit of all fluorescent lighting fixtures with high-efficiency, mercury free ballasts
  • Use of energy efficient light bulbs wherever possible
  • Use of passive lighting in warehouse and office facilities during daylight hours
  • Move toward electronic purchasing, payment and archiving
  • Use of environmentally friendly substrates in printing whenever possible and practical
  • Use of 100% post consumer copy and printer paper
  • All printers set to automatically print double sided
  • Replaced beverage vending machines in offices with fountain machine to eliminate can and bottle waste

Catering - Utah Food Services

Thinking globally, UFS promotes mindful and creative ways to reduce our carbon footprint, incorporating the three R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). We believe that in conjunction with protecting our planet through green initiatives, we must also take care of its people. Feeding the hungry, helping our neighbors, supporting local charities and non-profit organizations are just some of the ways we act locally.

  • Green Ware: 100% biodegradable greenware is our standard disposable service-ware including hot and cold cups, plates, napkins and cutlery, which are plant derivatives instead of petroleum based resources.
  • Water Conservation: Dish machines with low-level water arms cut water usage by 30%. Our sales staff promotes water coolers as a the eco-friendly alternative to plastic bottles. Currently, a program to reduce the amount of china pre-set on banquet tables is underway.
  • Community Outreach: The Utah Food Bank and surrounding shelters benefit from surplus food inventory delivered in resuable containers. In addition to supporting local charities through cash donations and discounted pricing, UFS underwrites numerous receptions through in-kind donations.
  • Flexible Fuel Vehicles: Environmentally sound buying practices include replacing aged cargo vans with vehicles that run on a combination of ethanol and gasoline.
  • Local Buying Practices: We offer organic, seasonal and locally grown food products whenever possible.
  • Citra Clean: Meticulously clean kitchens free from harmful chemicals are a priority. Therefore, we incorporate 100% biodegradable non-caustic citrus based all purpose cleaner (Citra Sol) into our cleaning program.
  • Recycling: Our recycling program includes paper, cardboard, aluminum, steel cans, all plastic containers (#1-#7), grease and fry oil. UFS supports the recycling program at the Salt Palace Convention Center, whereby we encourage our neighborhood partners to utilize our resources for their recycling efforts. UFS developed a system to compost all fruit, vegetable and floral waste, and a glass-recycling program is underway.
  • Education and Training: Employee participation and training is key to our successful and sustainable recycling program. We encourage our "green team" to develop and contribute new ideas and initiatives as we continually evolve our eco-efforts. We work in conjunction with Momentum Recycling on training seminars, and ultimately to reach the desired diversion rate.

Marriott International:

Marriott is the first hospitality management company to join the EPA's Climate Leaders program and is on track to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by nearly one-fifth over the ten year period from 2000-2010 - approaching one million tons of climate warming cases.

Salt Lake City Marriott Downtown:

We consult with the Recycling Coalition of Utah and reference their recycling guide for some area of the hotel, i.e. computer/electronics recycling, wood pallet recycling.

Systems & Evaluation

Marriott International: Marriott's Environmentally Conscious Hospitality Operations program (ECHO) focuses on water and energy conservation, clean air initiatives, wildlife preservation, "reduce-reuse-recycle" waste management, and clean-up campaigns.

Communications

In-hotel communications procedures encourage associates to save energy and be environmentally aware.

A computerized tracking system called Guestware identifies repair priorities so leaking toilets/showers and faucets can be repaired quickly, reducing water usage.

External Partnerships

Marriott's Spirit To Serve our communities day is an annual event in Salt Lake. In 2007 the hotel associates participated in planting over 700 trees as well as plants and vegetables at the Jordan River Ecological Restoration Project and the Rose Park Ecological Garden in the Salt Lake City area.

The hotel provides bike racks and locker rooms for changing, to encourage associates to ride bikes to and from work.

We provide associates subsidized light rail monthly passes (50% paid by hotel) to encourage use of mass transit.

  • By conserving energy, our hotels around the world are on track to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 1 million tons over 10 years - 2000 to 2010. That's equivalent to taking 140,000 cars off the road.
  • We've decreased our energy use and saved 65% on our hotel lighting costs by replacing 450,000 light bulbs with fluorescent lighting since 2006.
  • Marriott received the 2007 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for three years of outstanding performance and has earned more ENERGY STAR labels (245) than any other hotel company.
  • We're reduced our hot water usage by 10% by replacing 400,000 shower heads.
  • We've conserved water, use of detergents and saved energy on hot water by encouraging guests to reuse their linens and towels during their hotels stays.
  • Marriott also pitched in on volunteer clean-up projects in our communities through Clean Up the World, a global environmental organization.
